Nevertheless, it is an integral part of Hinduism and Buddhism and needs to be accessible to anyone interested in investigating early mythology. And once you're caught up in the story, you are hooked. How can you rate a classic? Without assuming the arrogance to judge such a work, I mark it down on an editing point only. I was astounded, early in my read, to be told that two cantos had been omitted as "not suitable" for today's readers! How dare a scholarly translation assume a censorship role!Product details

I have read portions of this in high school. I was very pleased to have come across it again. It is a very difficult read when beginning, but it gets easier.

This is an excellent book for the youth to start with; when trying to learn about the indian culture and it's formation. How good will always prevail no matter what.
Well written and verses which flow so beautifully. I can only imagine the amount of hard work that must have gone into writing these beautiful words together into one beautiful poem

The translation is a bit dated, but it is still readable, unlike others that go out of their way to use archaic wording in an effort to make the text appear older.
[The Ramayan of Valmiki] isn't a book that you sit down and read as a novel. It tells of Antediluvian Hinduism, The life of Rama, in verse.
For student of early Hunduism it is a great read. However for the novice, you may be disappointed...D
